DAAD participates in GHEDEX 2011

German higher education institutions have become significantly more attractive for foreign students over the last few years and Germany has taken first position in the internationalisation of higher education, ahead of Australia, the United Kingdom and China, according to a British Council survey recently published.

MUSCAT The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) participated in the recently held GHEDEX 2011 Higher Education Exhibition, one of the most important international educational fairs in the region. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) promotes higher education in Germany and is one of the world's largest and most respected intermediary organisation in the field of academic exchange.

"Germany is well known for its expertise in the field of engineering, medicine, and a number of social studies. Many German universities enjoy an excellent international reputation due to their close ties with the industry, for example RWTH Aachen University has many links with the industry, such as Mercedes, VW, Bayer Leverkusen, Siemens etc. Compared to other universities worldwide, the tuition-fees at German universities are very low," said Professor Dr. Burkhard Rauhut, Rector of GUtech and former Rector of RWTH Aachen University.

"German universities are affordable and life expenses equivalent to those of any other European country. Approximately 200 potential students and their parents spoke to me at our exhibition stand and inquired about higher education in Germany," said Dr. Nicola Huson, DAAD Representative in Oman and German Lecturer at the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech). GUtech offers German as a second language, but all GUtech study-programmes are taught in English. In 2006 a DAAD Information centre was established in Abu Dhabi and since 2007 the DAAD has its office at GUtech.

"Germany has over 250,000 foreign students studying in various degree programmes at German universities and the number of Omani students is increasing," said Dr. Nicola. Postgraduates especially prefer to join an English language programme of study which are offered at many German universities.

Omani students in Germany

The number of Omani undergraduate and postgraduate students has increased noticeably throughout the last few years. "Students decide to study in Germany even if they have to learn German first. From 2008 - 2010 a total of 63 Omani undergraduate governmental scholarship holders have gone to Germany for their studies. All are all closely administered by the DAAD who offer prior preparation, organize the language courses, placements in the preparatory colleges and eventually the place of study at one of Germany`s +300 institutions of higher education," said Dr. Nicola. The DAAD offers comprehensive counseling on all matters related to study and research in Germany and provides counseling services for students, their parents and family as well as information for university faculties, government offices and research institutes.
