3D laptops and TVs without glasses to hit Oman this year
By Alex Adams A new generation of 3D laptops and televisions which do not require glasses will be available in Oman by July and December this year respectively. As the market for 3D TVs and notebooks with glasses increases in popularity, electronics manufacturer Toshiba has developed the world's first 3D system which does not need glasses.
Speaking to Muscat Daily at COMEX, Santosh Varghese, Toshiba 's computer systems division regional general manager for the Middle East and Africa, said the new technology will be available in Oman when the products are launched in the Gulf.
"The notebooks will be launched in July and will be ideal for gamers and people who watch movies on their notebooks."
"With some of these TVs, price will depend on volume. The price will initially be on the higher side, but that will change as it gets popular. 3D TVs with glasses are quite popular now," he said.
Launched in Japan as the Regza GL1 Series, the initial 12-inch model went on sale in Japanese stores on December 22 last year, with a price tag of US$1,440, with a 20-inch model released three days later.
Although quiet on the exact technology, Varghese added the 3D effect will stem from the way the light emitted from the screen is altered before it reaches the eyes. "The light emitted is modified in a certain way. If you stand in front of the notebook you can see an image in 3D, but you get a regular image if you view it from the side."
