Looting affects gas, food security in Yemen
By Faisal Darem The Yemen Economic Corporation ( YECO ) has confirmed that it is keen to provide the market with different food items at fixed prices in the various provinces.Mohamed al-Mualemi, assistant general-director of the corporation, said at a press conference held in the capital city Sana'a on Tuesday that they have strategic food reserves available.
He said these reserves would cover Yemen's food needs for six to eight months. Al-Mualemi said that bandits and looting have hindered YECO 's ability to cover the market's need for gas though.
He said that YECO has played a role in transporting gas to various provinces but ongoing attacks against transportation vehicles, particularly on the Sana'a-Marib road, has caused a crisis in this regard.
Al-Mualemi said that YECO was not directly involved in providing and distributing gas but that it contributed to transporting gas from Marib province, in particular, to the capital Sana'a.
Gas imported via Aden seaport could not be saved from acts of banditry though, said al-Mualemi. Abdullah al-Kohali, deputy director-general of YECO , said that it is a national institution seeking to provide materials and food to all citizens without discrimination.
He expressed regret that YECO was being targeted by looters when it transported foodstuff and gas. He said that this ultimately impacted on citizen's food security in various provinces.
