Arab Foreign Ministers to meet mid May to discuss Baghdad Arab Summit

BAGHDAD: Iraq's Permanent Representative to the Arab League ha said that the Arab Foreign Ministers would hold a meeting on May 15th next to discuss the defining of the time of holding the Arab Summit Conference in Baghdad.

"There is a memo, expected to reach us officially this afternoon (Wednesday), calling for holding a meeting for the Arab Foreign Ministers on May 15th next, and to include a viewpoint towards holding the Baghdad Summit in its scheduled time," Qais al-Azzaw told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

A number of media sources had quoted Arab League 's Secretary-General Amru Moussa to have called for a meeting of the Arab Foreign Ministers in Cairo soon, to discuss the possibility for postponing the Arab Summit's scheduled time of May 11th in Baghdad.

Moussa was quoted to have told Iraq's Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zibari, during a recent meeting, that he had agreed with the latter to call for a ministerial meeting to discuss the "postponement of the Summit."

"The general atmosphere in the Region is tense, and there are differences in the Gulf Region and the Arab Region as whole, thing that won't allow the Summit meeting to be productive as this phase," Moussa said.

On his part, Zibari said that Iraq was prepared to receive the Summit, but it would commit itself with any decision, taken by the Arab Ministers, if they agree on the Summit's postponement.
