Barwa replaces controversial chief executive
DOHA: Dogged by controversy over the appointment of a new chief executive officer (CEO) early this month, the state-backed Barwa Real Estate Company has replaced the incumbent, Dr Mohamed Assad Al Emadi, and nominated an Acting Group CEO, Abdulla bin Abdulaziz Turki Al Subai.A brief press statement issued yesterday by the company said that the board of directors meeting presided over by the newly-elected chairman Ali Hitmi Al Hitmi appointed Al Subai as Acting Group CEO.
The resolution has been approved by a majority of the board members and took effect yesterday, the statement added. It made no mention of
the current status of Al Emadi.
Contacted for comment, one of the senior executives of the company who was among those officials who had quit in protest against Al Emadi's move to sack some 190 company employees immediately after he had taken over on January 6, said he was "extremely happy."
Asking not to be named, he told The Peninsula: "As I said earlier, we resigned because we didn't agree with the way
Al Emadi acted and sacked so many employees without consulting us, the seniors."
A study should have been conducted and based on consultations with department heads, employees would have been retrenched. "How can you simply lay off so many employees without any justification or study," he said.
Asked if he thought all those senior employees who were unhappy with Al Emadi's actions would now take back their resignations and resume work, he said he hoped so but could not say anything with certainty.
"I can only talk about myself. I will withdraw my resignation and resume duty. That is for sure," said the executive.
