Emir issues order to preserve traditional Makkah architecture
MAKKAH: Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah, has ordered that all buildings in the vicinity of the Grand Mosque heed the "traditional Makkah-style of architecture" both inside and out while conforming to international standards of modern construction.According to the regional head of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, the Emir's orders seek to "preserve the old Makkan Islamic style of architecture" and give the area a "pleasing aesthetic appearance to evoke the spirituality of the place". "At the same time," Muhammad Al-Amri said, "all modern conditions and standards must be met in terms of safety features and other requirements."
He said the order entailed both the external facades and interior décor of residential and commercial buildings and tower blocks to "recall the ancient historic eras of Makkah".

Though i am not saudi but deffenitely dierective from prince KHALID AL-FAISAL for to reflecting traditional local archticture with new blend for buildings is very wise move.
Frankly when we go there we wanted to c an old city with faced lift.
We all know what kingdom rulers of the past & present have done to make the place comfortable for the guets of ALLAH & still coming up with new ideas & huge investments to further their love for the place as well as comfort & ease for would be guest of ALLAH.
I have a sugestion for the ruler King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, why not instead of grandial hotels build housing scheme around the Kaba area to cater for expected guests with facility of todays comfort, bearing minimum(as too much of comfort & luxury eats away the spritual sincerety). The houses should be of same look(might also be different) but with sme facilities(no class or any other distinction). This project will be a gift from the Custoidian of the Two holy mosque on behalf of people of Saudi Arabia to the Guests Of Allah(rich or poor, black or white).I said gift because the costs of going to Haj or umra is becoming almost impossible for very many believers. If facility is provided by the His Excelency's govt then charges for using residential facility in this specially designed city, while there could be kept to moderate rate all through the year, thus providing great relief for vary many guests of ALLAH.This will remove the exploiting behaviour of risidents provider as well as every single person would be enjoying same facility for those numbered days going to same mosque worshiping same ALLAH.
wassalam
