Bee'ah Expands its Waste Management & Recycling Operations into the East Coast Region of Sharjah
SHARJAH, UAE - 26 March 2011: Bee'ah, the UAE's leading integrated environmental and waste management company, today announced its expansion into the East Coast of the Emirate of Sharjah, as well as plans to develop waste management and recycling operations in Khor Fakkan, Kalba, Dibba Al Hisn and surrounding areas.Bee'ah's operational geographic expansion to provide waste management and recycling services in the East Coast region of the Emirate is in line with the vision and directions of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi - Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah. Bee'ah's mandate entails the application of international best practices in environmental and waste management throughout the emirate to resolve existing challenges. Bee'ah is also focused on implementing effective waste management procedures that significantly reduce the risks of disease outbreaks and enhance the environment in Sharjah.
Bee'ah has been commissioned to work closely with the municipalities of the East Coast region and to operate the waste management facilities and landfills based on its short history, marked by many milestones. Further to re-engineering the existing three landfill sites, Bee'ah will transport some of the waste from these areas to the Bee'ah Waste Management Complex (WMC) in Al Saj'ah. To complement this, the company has already started installing 3-stream recyclers in certain areas of the East Coast and has begun implementing outreach programmes in schools, to raise awareness amongst the community and encourage them to segregate their waste.
Following the evaluation of the landfills in the East Coast, Bee'ah found significant challenges with the disposal sites which were suitable for older and smaller communities in the past. However, these communities have outgrown this older mode of disposal.
To address these challenges Bee'ah has proposed a three-phase workplan to take over the operation in the area:
Phase 1: Stabilise the landfill operations to prevent further deterioration of the existing site, and establish proper control and security.
Phase 2: Implement an integrated solid waste management plan (ISWMP) for the East Coast region.
Phase 3: Remediation of the existing dumping sites including the extinguishing of internal fires, excavation of waste, proper treatment and segregation of materials, back-filling and reclamation of the land area.
Since 2009, Bee'ah and the Sharjah City Municipality as a strategic partner, have successfully transformed the landfill at the Waste Management Complex (WMC) in Al Saj'ah into a safe disposal site that was re-engineered using state-of-the-art technology, best practices and processes to ensure the highest available standards of safety and efficiency. This included a liner system, leachate collection and monitoring system to continuously protect ground and surface water, as well as enhancement of the visual aesthetics on surrounding areas and local residents.
Bee'ah's WMC represents an entirely new approach to managing waste in our region and includes a number of industrial, commercial and residential waste diversion operations and facilities. The WMC houses the Material Recovery Facility, the Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling Facility, the Tyre Recycling Facility, the compost plant, and other recycling facilities.
Mr. Khaled Al Huraimel, the Chief Executive Officer of Bee'ah, said: "Bee'ah's long-term strategy for growth would position the company as the leader of environmental change not only in Sharjah, but beyond the emirate's borders as well. Thus, Bee'ah is also looking at expanding into the central region of the Emirate of Sharjah in the near future, and is potentially looking into expansion plans to other emirates."
