Move to protect children from Web of predators

ABU DHABI -- To mark the global Safer Internet Day on February 8, the Ministry of Interior's Higher Child Protection Committee (HCPC), in association with the Telecommunications and Regulatory Authority (TRA), has endorsed the 'Yahoo! Safety Oasis', an online programme that educates the youth on how to make smart choices online, as part of the educational and awareness programmes in the UAE.

"The HCPC as well as several agencies participating in this event are adopting the slogan, 'It's more than a game, it's your life'. The main purpose is to make the youth realise that their virtual behaviour can strongly affect their real lives, even if they try to hide their real identities behind false names or code names. There is a strong link between one's virtual behaviour and real behaviour," explained Major-General Nasser Al Nuaimi, MoI Secretary-General and Chairman of the HCPC.

He noted that at present, the age at which children start using the internet is becoming increasingly younger. "The technology generation of today is far younger than at any previous time. Around half of these youngsters use the internet for more than one hour daily. Most of them feel relaxed and are able to express themselves more openly in a virtual environment than in real life," Maj.-Gen. Al Nuaimi said.

According to Lt Col Faisal Mohammed Al Shamari, member of the HCPC, international statistics indicate that gamers spend on average eight hours online per day. Other statistics also showed that youths sleep two to three hours lesser on average than their peers ten years ago.

"Online safety is one of the HCPC's top priorities, and the best way to raise this awareness is reaching out to children and educating them at a young age through the development of a variety of programmes that help promote responsible and safe internet practices. The committee found 'Yahoo! Safety Oasis' to be a very innovative tool to be promoted across the UAE so that it can eventually be integrated as part of internet and computer learning programmes," Lt Col Al Shamari added. "Online traffic is increasing across the Middle East, yet awareness of online safety issues is relatively low in the region. Our objective when creating 'Yahoo! Safety Oasis' was to build a valuable resource to educate youngsters on digital literacy as early as possible," said Andy Abbar, head of product marketing for Yahoo! Maktoob .

'Yahoo! Safety Oasis' (http://esafe.yahoo.com) was developed by the Yahoo! Maktoob team to educate Arabic-speaking children about how to properly surf the net and protect their personal privacy through a series of fun and interactive courses offered through a number of Yahoo! Maktoob channels such as Kids, Games, and Family links. It is part of ' Yahoo! Safely', Yahoo! 's worldwide programme for fostering safer online experiences.

" Yahoo! Safely and 'Yahoo! Safety Oasis' help address the online issues children around the world are facing today including mobile usage, cyber-bullying and digital reputation. It's important that we take a proactive approach and work together as a global community to help foster a safer online experience for our children," said Catherine Teitelbaum, Yahoo! 's director of child safety and product policy.
