Large number of Jordanians shows up at Cairo airport after Monarch's initiative announced
AMMAN (JT) - Royal Jordanian ( RJ ) transported all Jordanians who arrived at Cairo airport to benefit from an initiative by His Majesty King Abdullah, who on Monday ordered to bring back all citizens from Egypt at his expense.RJ President/CEO Hussein Dabbas said in a statement that a large number of Jordanians started to arrive at Cairo International Airport yesterday morning, having heard about the generous offer of King Abdullah, who instructed RJ to transfer all citizens stranded at the airports in Cairo and Alexandria and without tickets at the expense of His Majesty.
He added that on Monday, the airline carried more than 1,100 Jordanians on board its aircraft from Cairo and Alexandria. The last extra flight landed at Queen Alia International Airport with only 41 passengers aboard, while it has a capacity of 170 seats, "an indicator that RJ was capable of transporting all Jordanians stranded at Cairo airport on that day", he said.
Jordanian diplomats in Cairo, who were cooperating with RJ personnel to facilitate the return flights, said that there were around 8,000 Jordanians in Egypt, including students and businesspeople, when the popular uprising started last week in the largest Arab nation.
The Kingdom's Ambassador to Egypt, Hani Mulki, told The Jordan Times on Saturday that there were citizens who showed up at the airport without tickets or money.
According to the RJ president, the delayed departures of RJ flights from Cairo airport were the result of overcrowding, both of passengers and of aircraft, which impaired the airport's ability to serve tens of thousands of passengers flying to various parts of the world in a short time.
Around 1,300 Jordanians were expected to arrive yesterday in the Kingdom on board RJ aircraft from all over Egypt.
