Flights delayed, diverted due to fog in Abu Dhabi

By Anwar Ahmad Foggy weather conditions in Abu Dhabi continued to disrupt flight operations as a large number of flights were delayed and diverted to other airports in the country.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology, the visibility level reduced to 50 metres on early Monday in some places of the emirate.

Ahmad Al Haddabi, Senior Vice-President of Airports Operations at Abu Dhabi Airports Company ( ADAC ), said that eight flights were diverted on Sunday to Dubai, Sharjah and Al Ain airports in the UAE, in addition to the Muscat International Airport in Oman.

Five flights were delayed at the Abu Dhabi International Airport for one to three hours. Passengers checked in for these affected flights were received at the airport hotel and the hospitality lounges at the airport, where they were provided with various hospitality services to ensure their comfort and convenience, Al Haddabi said.

Moreover, in the early hours of Monday, eight flights were diverted to other airports across the country due to the heavy fog, Al Haddabi said.

The Abu Dhabi International Airport has facilities installed for low visibility flight operations as the Category IIIB system allows flights to operate under severe weather conditions. The system helps in landing and taking off of flights systems. But the flights which are not equipped with Category 3 mechanism and whose pilots and crew members are not trained to operate under such condition are the worst hit by the fog.

Abu Dhabi in particular and the UAE in general experiences around two months of fog (mid-December to mid-February).The impacted flights were requested to divert their route as their aircraft were not Category III B compatible; a tool that allows certified pilots to land their aircraft smoothly and safely in a low visibility that falls below 200 meters, Al Haddabi said.

"Both runways at the Abu Dhabi International Airport are CAT IIIB certified. Safety is the number one priority for ADAC and it is reflected across all of our operations to maintain safety and security at all Abu Dhabi airports," he said.New Runway to be fitted with CAT IIIB. The new runway at the Abu Dhabi International Airport is being fitted with a full CAT IIIB Instrument Landing System. This will make it the most advanced runway currently in the UAE, allowing landing during thick fog and in adverse weather conditions, Al Haddabi said.

According to an Etihad Airways spokesperson, a total of 20 flights were delayed since Sunday morning till Monday. On Sunday night ten flights were delayed due to fog, which led to another 10 flights' delay on Monday morning. These flights were of different destinations.

All our Etihad Airways passengers were informed about the delays, the spokesperson said.
