Saudi transport sector achieves rapid annual growth
By NAWWAF AFIT RIYADH: The Kingdom's transport sector is growing at an annual rate estimated at six to 10 percent due to new roads and railways being constructed and integrated development projects, officials said.Development of roads for Haj and Umrah pilgrims has also witnessed rapid growth, at an annual rate of 10 to 15 percent, as part of efforts to meet the needs of the increasing number of religious tourists, they added.
The year 2010 witnessed the addition of 6,400 kilometers of new roads within the Saudi budget allocated for transport projects, according to officials.
Megaprojects include the Riyadh light railway, whose cost has reached SR11.2 billion; public-transport projects, which are part of the strategic plan for developing Jeddah Governorate, whose cost has reached SR21 billion; and 440 kilometers of railway lines being constructed in Makkah, Madina, Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City as part of the Al-Haramain Express Train, officials said.
The Saudi Conference for Urban Transport 2011, which will be held from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1, is an important platform for boosting sustainable growth in the sector, said Jimmy Doswell, director of Conferences in the International Center for Quality and Productivity. The event will host influential figures in the international transport industry to discuss the challenges and the latest solutions available to meet the Kingdom's growing needs in the sector, he said.
Elite speakers and participants from the public and private sectors reflect the importance of this conference and its role in supporting the development of the Kingdom's transportation sector, he said.
The gathering will review a diverse group of specialist services and solutions that include intelligent transport systems, systems for parking lots, speed surveillance cameras, radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and technology for the construction and development of roads, he added.
