Energy Cooperation With Tajikistan

Tajik President Imomali Rahmon said that the construction of Sangtudah-2 hydropower marks a new era of cooperation with Iran in building hydropower plants.
The Jajik president made the remarks during a ceremony to launch a new phase of the construction project of Sangtudah-2 hydropower plant on Sunday, IRNA reported. Iranian Energy Minister Majid Namjou also attended the ceremony.
They pressed buttons which detonated explosives, blocking the Vakhsh River, a tributary of the Amu-Darya River.
Rahmon pointed out that the companies, jointly set up by the two countries, are still working on other projects including a number of power plants.
He said the dam and the power plant will generate close to one million kilowatts of electricity per annum upon implementation which will enable the country to provide four hours more of electricity.
"Sangtoudah-2 is the logical continuation of the progressive trend of Iran's constructive measures in Tajikistan. It is a proof to the age-old tradition of cooperation and friendship between Iran and Tajikistan," he continued.
President Rahmon further stressed on the importance of the Sangtudah-2 dam for his country, noting that Tajikistan is suffering from shortage of electricity power.
He said the two states have always sought to reinvigorate their ties in various social and economic grounds.
According to the Tajik president, Sangtoudah-2 power plant construction project is already 90 percent complete and will soon come into operation.
Rahmon reminded that once the power plant comes online, it would play a remarkable role in power supply and development of national economy for Tajikistan.
Iran had earlier constructed the Sangtoudah-1 with the production capacity of 220 megawatt in Tajikistan.
Iran has sought hard to expand relations and cooperation with the Central Asia in the last two decades, especially since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took office in 2005.
