Health Ministry to set up vaccines factory

RIYADH: The Ministry of Health will set up a pharmaceutical factory in Makkah to produce vaccines against common diseases, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Al-Mirghalani told Arab News on Sunday.

The factory will produce vaccines for meningitis, seasonal influenza, whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus, Haemophilus influenza, Hepatitis B and others.

Under the agreement, Novartis Pharmaceutical Company is expected to supervise the transfer of technology and manufacture of the vaccines during the next two decades. The factory will be located on an area of 10,000 square meters with provisions for future expansion.

The facility is scheduled to commence commercial production in the first quarter of 2011.

Al-Mirghalani said the plant will not only supply the necessary medicines but it will remain a facility to provide job opportunities for a large number of Saudi youths in the pharmaceutical industry.

Speaking on the occasion, Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah said that the facility will also export vaccines to countries in the region.
