$3b KPIZ deals awarded by ADPC; Oracle supports

DUBAI -- The Abu Dhabi Ports Company , or ADPC , has awarded about Dh11 billion ($3 billion) in contracts so far to build the first phase of its new port and industrial zone, its chief executive said on Monday.

The first phase of Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone, or KPIZ, in Abu Dhabi, which is expected to be two-thirds the size of Singapore, is estimated to cost around Dh26.5 billion, CEO Tony Douglas said.

"We're in the order of about Dh11 billion of it, that's already committed," said the executive, who took the helm of Abu Dhabi Ports in June. "I think we've done about Dh6 billion [in contracts] in the last three or four months."

"The contracts include the port island construction phase which is obviously from the ground up," he said. "so, that's all the port buildings, all of the infrastructure that goes on top of the port and all of the systems."

KPIZ will be built over five phases and the state-owned company is also developing smaller ports in Abu Dhabi.

Meanwhile, Douglas on Monday also unveiled plans to strengthen its development of two major industrial zones at the Taweelah area.

"The support [from Oracle] will better help us get better," Douglas told the media at a conference during GITEX 2010.

The industrial zones, sprawling across sides of Shaikh Zayed Road in Taweelah, will be home to major industries and will have strategic proximities to key areas of both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Douglas also said that the first heavy rail network of its kind is being planned in the area, effectively linking the area with the island port off the coast of Dubai.

Zone 1, which is on the western side of Shaikh Zayed Road, will be approximately 50 square kilometres and is intended to house heavy-duty industries, strategically located near the port.

On the other hand, the 370-square kilometre Zone 2 on the eastern side is projected to hold high-end technology and research companies.

Douglas said that ADPC 's partnership with Oracle will enable it to streamline its processes and ensure the smooth flow of the project over the course of its timeframe.

The company also announced that it has gone love with Oracle E-Business Suite, which enhances ADPC 's operational efficiencies, empowers informed decision-making and further strengthens the security of its IT structure.
