Health Requirements For Umrah and Hajj (1431H) Season Announced

Riyadh -- The Ministry of Health has issued health requirements for performers of Umrah and Hajj this year (1431H) and informed the concerned authorities to circulate these prerequisites to Saudi Embassies and missions abroad, which should abide by all these requirements for issuance of visas for Umrah and Hajj performers this year.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, the Official Spokesman of Ministry of Health Dr. Khalid Bin Mohammed Marghalani pointed out that the Ministry has been gradually following developments of epidemic diseases, noting that the requirements of health this year focused on several topics including yellow fever, cerebrospinal meningitis fever, polio, and vaccination against seasonal influenza.

He said that Hajj and Umrah Performers coming from affected countries by Yellow Fever are requested to submit a valid vaccination certificate, according to the International Health Regulations. The Certificate must state that the holder is vaccinated against Yellow Fever before 10 days of the arrival to the Kingdom and no more than 10 years, adding that aircrafts, ships and other means of transportation coming from countries affected by Yellow Fever are requested to submit a valid certificate certifying the extermination of insects on-board according to the International Health Regulations.

Dr Marghalani said that countries affected by Yellow Fever are the following: Angola, Benin, Sudan, Senegal, Burkina Faso, the Republic Central Africa, Cameroon, Burundi, Chad, Uganda, Congo, C'te d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Ethiopia, Democratic Congo - Gabon - Gambia - Ghana - Guinea - Equatorial Guinea - Guinea Bissau, Togo, Kenya, Liberia, Sutomi and Principe, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Mali, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Brazil, Bolivia, Suriname, Peru, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina and Paraguay.

Dr Marghalani disclosed that Hajj and Umrah Performers or seasonal workers in Hajj areas, coming from different countries, must have a valid vaccination certificate against Meningococcal Meningitis (Before coming to the Kingdom no later than 10 days and not more than 3 years), adding that health authorities in these countries must make sure that children (2 years old and above) and adults are vaccinated with (ACYW135), adding that these African countries included Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Niger, Benin , Cameroon, Chad, Eritrea, Gambia, Senegal, and Central Africa.

He pointed out Saudi Health Authorities in ports will give preventive doses (one dose: only 500 mg of Ciprofloxacin) in order to reduce the spreading of the disease.

As for poliomyelitis, he said that the countries affected with this disease are (Uganda , Kenya, Benin, Angola, Togo, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Central African Republic, Chad, Cأ´te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, Nepal, pointing out that arrivals from these countries are requested to vaccinate children (less than 15 years old) with Oral Polio Vaccine before 6 weeks from the arrival date, and will have another dose on their arrival in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

He said people who suffer from chronic diseases (Heart Disease, Kidney Diseases, Respiratory Diseases, Neural Diseases and Diabetes), in addition of Immunodeficiency (from birth), HIV, Metabolic Diseases, pregnant women and overweight people should be vaccinated with season flu vaccination.

Dr Marghalani said that Hajj and Umrah Performers are not allowed to bring any kind of foodstuffs from their countries unless if it is canned, sealed or in easily opened containers for checking ingredients and in sufficient quantities for traveling by road.

In an eventuality of any health emergency or the spread of diseases subjected to International Health Regulations in Hajj and Umrah performers' countries, he said Health Authorities in the Kingdom may take any additional precautions toward the arrivals from these countries in coordination with the International Health Organization in a timely manner in order to avoid the spreading of infections among the pilgrims and Umrah performers, or transferred to their countries.
