Construction of Khalifa Industrial Zone to begin soon
ABU DHABI -- The construction work will begin soon on building infrastructure for the nation's largest industrial zone, which is part of the multi-billion dollar Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone project, to prepare the ground for setting up light, medium and heavy industries.The Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone will consist of a new, world-class multi-purpose offshore port and one of the largest integrated industrial zones in the world.
Work is already in progress on the construction of the port and allied facilities as four contracts worth Dh4.4 billion have been awarded in the past 15-months.
On the industrial zone part of the project, Abu Dhabi Port Company (ADPC), which is the master developer, has awarded on Sunday, the first contract valuing Dh484.6 million to Consolidated Contracting Engineering and Procurement S.A.L (CCC) to build roads and necessary infrastructure for providing utilities.
The contract includes the construction, fit-out, testing and commissioning of the civil and structural works for Industrial Zone Area 'A' primary Infrastructure (North).
ADPC Chief Executive Officer, Tony Douglas, termed the award as an 'exciting milestone' in the Industrial Zone's bright future."
Located midway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the Taweelah industrial district, KPIZ will commence operations in 2012 and over the long term to 2030 will comprise 420 square kilometers of prime industrial land organized into vertically integrated clusters for aluminium, steel, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, life sciences, food and beverages, glass, paper and other major sectors.
Highlights of the contract include construction of a 4.5 kilometre dual 3-lane carriageway and a 1.5 kilometre dual 4-lane carriageway to be called Shaikh Khalifa Industrial Road that will link the onshore port to the Industrial Zone, with associated road services including street lighting, and drainage.
Construction of an interchange is also part of the project that will connect the Mina Road with Shaikh Khalifa Industrial Road.
Construction of a three kilometre modular path for the transportation of oversize cargo from the port to Industrial Zone will also be built in the project.
Provision of utilities including electricity, telecommunication, potable water, waste water and irrigation.
KPIZ is a feature of the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030 and will play a major role in the emirate's industrial and economic diversification by serving as a key hub for large scale industrial investments serviced by a world class port, transport and other facilities.
Phase 1 of Khalifa Port will open in Q4 2012, replacing Abu Dhabi's existing main port of Mina Zayed.
The new port will have an initial capacity of two million Twenty Foot Equivalent Units of containers and nine million tons of general cargo.
The dedicated Emirates Aluminum Smelter or EMAL berth will be operational later this year.
When all phases of Khalifa Port are completed, it will have a capacity of 15 million TEU's of containers and 35 million tonnes of general cargo.
