World wants to learn lessons from Haj health

RIYADH: The Lancet magazine in collaboration with the Ministry of Health will organize a unique forum on mass gatherings medicine in Jeddah on Oct. 23-25.

Ministry of Health spokesman Khaled Al-Mirghalani said the conference is the first of its kind in the Middle East and Gulf region.

"The London-based medical journal is collaborating with the Saudi ministry in view of the fact that the ministry employs the most eminent medical experts in the area of interaction with mass gatherings in terms of treatment, preventive measures and monitoring of infections," Al-Mirghalani said in a statement to Saudi Press Agency.

"Experts in infections, general health and viral diseases as well as crowd control managers the world over are eager to benefit from Saudi expertise with regard to the management of Haj pilgrims and the impact of mass gatherings on public health."

A Lancet article recently claimed "Saudi Arabia has specialist expertise in the management of mass gatherings."

It added that among global mass gatherings, the Haj pilgrimage is the largest, most frequent, most diverse and most studied. One of the most extraordinary challenges facing Haj planners came in 2009, when the holy season coincided with the global H1N1 pandemic.

"Mass gatherings medicine is complex, encompassing enormous challenges in a number of areas: communicable disease alert and response systems; water and sanitation management; environmental health challenges; travel medicine; vaccination strategies; implementation of international health regulations; national and international security; emergency preparedness; transportation; immigration; crowd management; border control, and bioterrorism and other terrorism management," the article said.

The forum will offer an opportunity to share experiences in this area, particularly the challenges associated with hosting Haj during a World Health Organization-declared pandemic.

It will review the cross cutting role of religion, global-health diplomacy, foreign policy and vaccine strategies in disease control.

There will also be an opportunity to learn about mass gatherings as a one-stop research platform for the global epidemiology of communicable diseases in more than 160 countries.

It will also review isolation and quarantine challenges during mass gatherings in addition to providing an update on research challenges and innovative research tools adopted for this purpose.

The forum will also be a platform for discussion to explore consensus on and produce ideas for topics such as surveillance and outbreak containment during mass gatherings.
