Iranian's fingerprints match in Chechen leader's murder: expert

DUBAI -- A forensic expert told the Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday that the DNA and fingerprints found on the zipper of a bag that contained the gun used in killing Chechen leader Sulim Yamadayev in March 2009 was that of a 37-year-old Iranian suspect.

Dr Fareeda Alshammaly, Director of the Criminal Lab at Dubai Police, said the fingerprints had been identified as belonging to the Iranian.

Answering the queries of the defence, the expert said that other unidentified fingerprints were found on the bag and on a pair of gloves in the bag.

Asked if the fingerprints could be taken from the metallic zip, the expert said the police took the specimens and conducted various tests that showed that the fingerprints were of the Iranian suspect.

Tajik businessman M.J and Iranian clerk M.T have been charged with collaboration in the premeditated murder of Yamadayev, a former Chechen military leader who was gunned down in the parking lot of his Jumeirah Beach Residence home in Dubai in March last year.

The judge adjourned the case to August 24 to produce the 27-year-old Tajik suspect who did not appear before the court on Monday.

The Court of First Instance in April this year sentenced the Iranian and the Tajik to 25 years each in prison for aiding and abetting Yamadayev's assassins. They were to be deported after serving their jail terms.

The assassins, believed to be four in number, are still at large.

Yamadayev was shot in the back of the head as he stepped out of his car in the basement of the Jumeirah Beach Residence flat, where he lived with his family.

A police officer earlier claimed that while the Iranian gave lift to the assassination mastermind in his car, the Tajik helped the killer flee the country.
