Sharjah public transport attracts more commuters
More bus routes and increased daily trips have attracted more people to Sharjah public transport, with the number of commuters exceeding 3.5 million this year so far.The Director General of Sharjah Transport, Abdullah Al Zari, said that the Sharjah public intercity buses saw a rise in the number of passengers transported this year by almost 11 per cent.
"As many as 3,535,000 passengers took Sharjah intercity public buses from January 1 to June 30 this year compared to 3,169,000 over the same period in 2009. The 366,000 extra passengers transported represent a rise of 10.9 per cent."
Operating more bus routes, increasing daily trips, decreasing frequency time, and developing bus fleet, are some of the main reasons behind the significant rise in the number of people using Sharjah public transport.
"Being up to the level in terms of safety and convenience, the 30/49-seat intercity buses are attracting more than six million passengers every year," Al Zari told Khaleej Times, while adding that public buses make more than 250 trips daily.
"As many as 2,429,849 Sharjah-Dubai passengers were transported in 2010 against 2,414,759 over the same period in 2009," he said.
"Sharjah Transport is currently operating 19 bus routes and plans to launch two more this year -- one in the central region from Jubail to Al-Dhaid, Al Mulaiha and Al Mudam, and one from Sharjah International Airport to Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah."
Meanwhile, staff drivers of Sharjah intercity public buses committed only 18 traffic violations this year. "This represents one violation against every 735 trips, and that reflects drivers' compliance with rules and regulations, particularly the bus schedule and frequency time."
