'Oil spill not affecting BP's work in Jordan'

AMMAN -- The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has not affected the work of British Petroleum (BP) in the Kingdom, an official from the National Petroleum Company ( NPC ) said on Monday.

The BP project to develop the Risheh gas fields will continue as normal according to the plan submitted to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, NPC Director General Qutaibah Abu Qura told the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

BP is currently investing in the Risheh gas fields in the northeastern region. In the first phase of the project, according to the agreement, BP will spend the next three years exploring a 7,000-square-kilometre plot along the Jordanian-Iraqi border, at an estimated cost of $237 million.

If proven economically feasible, BP is expected to provide $8-10 billion in investment in hopes of extracting 330 million cubic feet of gas from the area per day, with the potential of producing one billion cubic feet daily.

BP 's costs over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill soared Monday to $3.12 billion, Agence France-Presse reported, far higher than the $2.65 billion given by the energy firm one week ago.

BP 's share price has collapsed more than 50 per cent since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig it leased sank on April 22, two days after a blast killed 11 workers.
