Ras Laffan community programme takes road safety drive to schools

DOHA: The Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Programme is taking road safety into the schools in the North.

The 'Safe Schools' road safety campaign aims to make children living near Ras Laffan safer on the roads now and ultimately better drivers when they grow up.

The Ras Laffan Community Outreach Programme was developed to create a respectful, trust-based partnership between companies in Ras Laffan and nearby communities. It also aims to develop sustainable programmes benefiting the community in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

All the major companies with projects in Ras Laffan are members of the outreach programme, including Ras Laffan Industrial City , Al Khaleej Gas, Dolphin Energy , Oryx GTL, Qatargas , RasGas , and Shell .

The Safe Schools initiative will include a slew of activities for young people in the Northern area to raise awareness of safety, health and the environment. Road safety is the first campaign being run this year.

Over 15 schools in the North are expected to participate in the programme, which is being held at Al Khor Girls' Elementary School.

The programme will focus on the importance of wearing seatbelts, and on how to be visible to drivers whilst on the road. Safety experts will use a rollover car and seatbelt convincer to simulate the effects of wearing a seatbelt and its importance during an accident.

The Traffic Department has supported the campaign by lending a wrecked car, which is being shown to students to highlight vehicle safety features.

Before to the campaign, the students were also asked to produce posters highlighting what road safety means to them. Over 200 creative posters were received from the schools, and prizes are being awarded throughout the campaign.

Director of Ras Laffan Industrial City , Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani, who oversees the community outreach programme said: "Road safety is a top priority for all companies working in Ras Laffan . Road accidents take many lives in Qatar and worldwide and damage many others through injury. Every road accident is preventable. I would like to thank Shell for leading this road safety initiative on behalf of the companies in the outreach programme."
