Unlocking the power of maps to improve local government services
Abu Dhabi, March 03, 2010: Plans to enhance government efficiency and improve local services through easier, faster and improved access to geospatial information are underway as a result of work undertaken by the Department of Municipal Affairs to improve local government infrastructure. A framework for better geospatial data management was presented to the three municipalities of Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and Western Region and representatives from Abu Dhabi System and Information Centre during a workshop held this week.
The DMA has published a roadmap which outlines how a more effective geospatial infrastructure can be created. It recommends the creation of a cross-municipal database of geographic information. This can be shared by the three municipalities and provide access to the geospatial (GIS) data that is current, standardised and seamless.
Explaining how the GIS framework will support improved local services across the emirate, H.E Jasem Mohammed Al Darmaki, executive director of land and property management at DMA said: "The DMA is setting the standard for more effective use of geospatial data across the emirate by improving GIS infrastructure. Currently each municipality uses different GIS technologies and processes. By standardising and enhancing the storage, management and use of this geographical data, we can make local government faster, more efficient and better placed to deliver improved services to residents and businesses across the emirate."
The DMA's Property & Spatial Database Division was responsible for developing the recommendations: "Roadmap for Geospatial Framework". The roadmap provides the strategic direction to enable DMA and the three municipalities to fulfill their respective mandates relating to Geospatial Data and Services. This week's workshop introduced the new MSSI technologies to a team of cross-municipal specialists and representatives from other government entities.
About Department of Municipal Affairs:
The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) commenced operations in May 2007, following the Abu Dhabi Executive Council's decision to integrate the Emirate's municipal system. As a new government entity, the Department of Municipal Affairs was created to lead, coordinate and oversee three municipalities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. The DMA has a regulatory role while the service delivery and operations are at the municipality level.
On the 5th of May 2008, the Department of Municipal Affairs along with the Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality and Western Region Municipality embarked upon a new municipal services journey, with the signing of the historic Municipal Charter which aligns the DMA and three municipalities towards greater collaboration and cooperation.
