Top 10 mobile operators hold more than 77% of subscribers market share in Africa
Monday, February 8th, 2010: It is well known that Africa is one of the fastest growing markets in mobile communications regarding the millions of new subscriptions registered by operators each quarter, but less known are the key players driving and benefiting from this market growth, and that is the main purpose of this article highlighting the 10 largest groups operating on the continent.In fact, according to Dataxis Intelligence's last findings, the ten largest groups operating on the continent account for more than 77% of the continental subscribers' base with nearly 334 million serviced customers.
They are led by UK-based Vodafone Group detaining up to 18.7% of market share followed closely by South Africa's MTN Group that holds an 18% share, ahead of Zain Group from Kuwait which claims more than 11% of overall customer base. At the fourth and fifth places there are the Egyptian-based Mobinil Holding and Orascom Telecom with respectively 5.7% and 5% of all mobile users in Africa.
