Hearings open in Algerie Telecom, terrorism case
An Algerian court on Monday (January 4th) will begin hearing a case of alleged misuse of Algerie Telecom phone lines by a terrorist network, El Watan reported. At least fifty people, including six senior officials of the telecommunications company, will appear before the Annaba tribunal to discuss financial losses and other issues regarding hacked phone lines reportedly used by al-Qaeda.The case erupted in 2005, when Interpol agents arrested a Yemeni national in London. Investigators found that the Yemeni student had been using a terminated Algerian phone line to contact suspected al-Qaeda members in Yemen, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Malaysia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, the US and the UK.
