Jordan: New partnership to promote aspiring filmmakers
AMMAN - The Royal Film Commission and the Dubai International Film Festival have agreed to closer collaboration to nurture the region's next generation of filmmakers. The Dubai International Film Festival ( DIFF ) will support Royal Film Commission (RFC) activities under a recently signed agreement.
In their first collaboration, four graduates from the RAWI-Middle East Screenwriters Lab will attend the Dubai Film Connection to further develop their projects and network with industry professionals.
"Both DIFF and the RFC share the same aims for promoting filmmaking from the Arab world, and the partnership will further lend impetus to achieving our objectives," DIFF Managing Director Shivani Pandya said at the signing ceremony last week.
A press statement released earlier this week cited RFC General Manager George David as saying: "Such an agreement is one step further towards a much needed regional integration in the film world."
Established filmmakers help aspiring screenwriters develop their feature film scripts through one-on-one sessions at the RAWI Screenwriters Lab, which is held annually in Wadi Feinan in consultation with the Sundance Institute.
According to the RFC, previous filmmakers who have participated in programmes both at RAWI and Dubai Film Connection, include Cherien Dabis with "Amreeka" (Rawi alumni 2005 and DFC Work in Progress 2008); Mohamed Al Daradji with "Son of Babylon" (Rawi alumni 2006 and DFC 2007); Selma Bargach with "The Fifth String" (Rawi alumni 2008 and DFC 2008).
