AFED's Climate Change Conference in Beirut Gathers Leading Environmentalists From All Over the World
Beirut: As the date draws near to the annual conference of the Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) in Beirut on 19-20 November, more international and regional leading environmental figures are confirming their participation. Among those is Dr. Ashok Khosla, one of the world's leading experts on the environment and sustainable development, president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and president of Club of Rome. Also giving hands-on presentations are Dr. Atiq Rahman, recipient of the UNEP 'Champion of the Earth 2008' award and Chairman of the Climate Action Network South Asia (CANSA) and Dr. Youba Sokona, Executive Secretary of the Sahel and Sahara Observatory.Among the speakers in the special plenary session, which will offer practical insight into transition to a green economy to help fight climate change, is Ms. Carol Sanford, CEO of Development Economics Group International and advisor to various Fortune 500 companies, as well as Dr. Mohamed El-Ashry former head of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and member of the International Committee on Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
Ministers from the Arab region and abroad have also confirmed their participation in a debate on national policies regarding climate change, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry of Qatar Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Minister of Environment of Iraq Narmeen Osman, Minister of Environment of Jordan Khaled Irani, Minister of Water and Environment of Yemen Abdulrahman El-Ariani and Minister of Environment of UAE Rashed Bin Fahd.
At the moment work continues on the production of a landmark documentary to be released during AFED conference entitled "Wet & Dry", which summarizes the findings of AFED's 2009 annual report.

This is of course in addition to the official sponsor of the conference, Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi and the OPEC Fund for International Development.
