Abu Dhabi seeks to attract more visitors with new beach brand
Details of the world-class facilities and recreational amenities being developed on the capital's corniche have been announced by Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) .The council, which is responsible for Abu Dhabi's urban environment, also unveiled a new identity for the Abu Dhabi beaches designed by the Office of the Brand of Abu Dhabi.
The corniche will offer enhanced pedestrian amenities including a new beach boardwalk, lighting, shading, improved cycling facilities and facilities for football, beach volleyball, skateboarding and rollerblading.
There will be improved access to the capital city's beaches and waterfront, 26 retail, food and beverage outlets and a range of cultural and environmental activities and events.
The improvements are being undertaken jointly by the UPC , Executive Affairs Authority, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Department of Transport and Abu Dhabi Police. They are a key component of the Corniche Beach enhancement programme that began more than a year ago.
The project will boost safety by improving street-crossings for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and provide better access to the Gulf waters.
"The authorities in Abu Dhabi recognise the importance of the corniche area as a focal point of leisure activities for residents as well as tourists visiting the UAE's capital," said UPC General Manager Falah Al Ahbabi.
"The project currently underway will ensure that the corniche provides comprehensive recreational and leisure opportunities for the entire Abu Dhabi community and will ensure that residents and visitors have access to a host of leisure and entertainment activities that have not been available before. The feeling will be of a beach resort for the community," he said.
Transportation enhancements at the four main intersections along the Corniche Road will improve pedestrian, cyclist and motorist safety and will be augmented with enhanced cycling paths and shuttle buses. A new parking area near the public beach will have a park-and-ride service with stops at each of the six entry points to the beach.
Work on the project is being carried out at a time when beach usage is at its lowest to ensure that the enhanced amenities will be ready for residents and visitors to enjoy during the best beach seasons.
The work, which may require temporary road diversions as it nears its completion, is being carried out in record time by a team of local and international consultants and contractors.
The new logo for Abu Dhabi Beaches uses Arabic calligraphy to create a sense of a wave breaking gently onto the shore.
It incorporates a dhow sail as part of the calligraphy connecting the beach to Abu Dhabi's maritime heritage. The new identity is intended to communicate all the fun and excitement of a day out at the beach while retaining an air of sophistication that complements the Abu Dhabi brand.
"The new identity will be used to brand the upgraded Corniche Beach when it opens with improved facilities that includes food and beverage kiosks, beach rentals, improved access and parking and new walkways and landscaping," said Al Ahbabi.
"The intention is to brand all future public beaches as part of the Abu Dhabi Beaches family to create a collection of beach destinations with superb facilities and beautiful settings."
