Energy, transport sectors to receive boost from US grants
AMMAN - The Kingdom's energy and transport sectors will receive a boost thanks to two grants from the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and the USTDA signed two grant agreements on Sunday under which $788,000 will be used to fund feasibility studies and technical support programmes for several priority development projects in the Kingdom.
Under the first grant, the National Electrical Power Company will receive $370,000 to evaluate the Kingdom's electrical grids for the incorporation of renewable energy into the country's energy mix.
Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suhair Al-Ali and acting USTDA Director Leocadia Zack signed the agreements at a ceremony yesterday attended by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Khaldoun Qteishat.
The minister added that Jordan seeks to benefit from various support programmes provided by the USTDA, an independent semi-governmental institution specialised in technical support and specialised studies for the economies of developing countries.
"USTDA projects in the Kingdom have included the funding of a number of technical and feasibility studies mainly in the water, communications, IT, power, electricity, transport and environment sectors," Al-Ali said, noting that the US-based agency has provided the Kingdom with around $9 million between 1996 and 2009.
For his part, Qteishat said the government aspires to have 7 per cent of the Kingdom's power generated through solar energy by the year 2015 and 10 per cent by 2020, noting that the country's energy cooperation with USTDA dates back to 1996.
"With these grants and upcoming events, USTDA is pleased to further efforts to develop renewable energy resources and transportation infrastructure in the Middle East as a foundation for economic growth," Zack said during the ceremony, which was also attended by NEPCO Director General Ahmad Hiyasat, USTDA Chief Adviser Thomas Hardy and US Deputy Chief of Mission in Amman Karl Chris.
