Ministry says vegetables import ban proven successful

BAGHDAD: The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture has announced the success of its plan to ban the importation of vegetables in an attempt to support local produce.

"We receive a daily report on the prices of vegetables, which are reported to be stable...This proves the success of the plan to ban importation" a senior under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Agriculture, Subhi al-Jamili, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The Ministry of Agriculture aims to support the local product, Jamili noted.

The official added that the ban will be lifted if a shortage of vegetables is reported in local markets.
