DP World Djazair Backs Marine Environment Initiative in Algeria
'Clean Ports' Collects 100 TEU of Waste, Calls Attention to Effects of Man-Made PollutionAlgiers, May 31, 2009:- DP World Djazair, a joint venture between global port operator DP World and the Algerian port authority, today launched "Clean Ports", a comprehensive marine clean-up effort. The initiative was jointly sponsored by DP World supplier Kone Cranes, a leading global manufacturer of heavy lifting equipment to the maritime industry, and coordinated by RECIFS, an Algerian association of professional divers.
"Clean Ports" involved three teams of more than 20 divers each working simultaneously at three recreational and fishing ports near the Algerian capital--Tamentefoust, El Jamila and Sidi Fredh. Over a six-hour stretch, RECIFS, assisted by members of community recreational associations Mordjane and CADASUB, combed the sea bed for 'macro waste', including aluminum cans, lubrificant canisters, oil drums, etc. Volunteers placed waste in specially-marked bins, which were then disposed of properly at a local landfill and recycling facility. In all, divers collected enough waste by volume to fill more than 100 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). Algerian National Radio and Algiers Radio Bahdja broadcast live updates from each of the three sites throughout the morning, to a combined audience of more than 2 million people.
In addition to removing waste, a major objective of "Clean Ports" was to build awareness about the effects of man-made litter, which poses significant risk to both human and marine life. Uncollected trash can cause serious injury and contributes to the spread of disease; plastic bags are responsible for the choking and drowning deaths yearly of thousands of sea mammals, including dolphins and whales. Each summer, Algeria's beaches are visited more than 30 million times. According to RECIFS estimates, the average beach-goer leaves behind an estimated 500g of trash per visit, most of which is not biodegradable.
Anil Singh, SVP and Director for Africa Region, DP World , said:
Mohammed Al Khadar, Director General, DP World Djazair, said:
" DP World is unswervingly committed to the environment, and will expend every effort to reduce our ecological footprint. We congratulate our co-sponsors and member clubs for making this inspirational event possible."
