Shipping industry experts discuss management of LNG supply

DOHA: Academic and industry experts in port operations and shipping management tackled, during the latest Carnegie Club roundtable discussion "Managing Scale and Complexity in LNG Supply Chains" at the Carnegie Mellon University-Qatar (CMU-Q), the challenges faced by the port operations of RasGas , QatarGas and Ras Laffan City in order to meet the aggressive growth and increased output demands planned for the industry.

The group - which included R. Ravi, Carnegie Bosch professor of Operations Research and Computer Science at the Tepper School of Business at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh; Ahmed Al Khulaifi, chief operating officer of the Commercial Shipping at QatarGas ; Derek Bentley, Production Allocation and Planning manager of the Commercial and Shipping Group of RasGas ; and Michael Grindley, head of Logistics at the Ras Laffan Industrial City - discussed employing collaborative management arrangements between the operating companies and port operations in the form of information and human resource systems, as well as common IT infrastructure and harbor management systems.

The discussion touched on the work done by the Tepper School faculty in modeling the valuation of real options such as extra storage tanks and ships.

"The LNG industry in Qatar is going to expand and change rapidly over the next 10 years, and we expect our revenue to at least double. We will be looking to Carnegie Mellon Qatar to help train the business and finance leaders to help us manage this growth efficiently and translate it into the country's development," said Al Khulaifi.

The Carnegie Club hosts forums for in-depth discussion on relevant and significant business topics in Qatar and the wider region. Events are held eight times a year at the CMU-Q's new building at the Education City. Future events include leadership and executive education modules and strategic human resource management. The Carnegie Club provides a forum for discussion that acts as a catalyst for Qatar's progress as a global business leader.
