Yemen: Parliament summons government for questioning over security
Yemen's parliament has summoned the government for questioning regarding concerns over the ongoing state of insecurity in the country, most noticeably demonstrated by the terrorist attacks against Koreans in Shibam and Sana'a.In its March 21 session, parliament stressed that responsibility also lay with the government, and criticized the government for failing to prevent the increasing number of attacks.
MP Nabil al-Basha said the attacks in Shibam and Sana'a were criminal acts, which are rejected by all religions. He called on parliament to enact new laws that will help uproot terrorism, which has become an increasingly dangerous problem affecting security, stability and Yemeni development. Al-Basha also called on the government to enact a decisive national strategy for the fight against terrorism.
The head of the GPC ruling party bloc in parliament Sultan al-Barakani criticized security bodies for their failure to protect the Korean delegation, and questioned who may have provided the terrorists with information about the Korean security team's schedule.
Al-Barakani stressed society's responsibility in the fight against terrorism, and called on all government and civil society organizations to work together to fight this issue. Al-Barakani also stressed the responsibility of religious scholars to guide the country's youth, and said religious scholars have been busy bickering about the issue of the age of marriage, rather than educating the public and youth about the dangers of terrorism.
MP Abdullah al-Odaini from the Islah Party attacked al-Barakani's accusations against religious scholars, saying they have been performing their roles properly. However al-Odaini criticized the media, school curriculums and mosques for not better enlightening the country's youth.
Meanwhile, MP Abdul Aziz Jubari and Islamist MP's criticized the way the Yemeni government has dealt with terrorist groups, and called on authorities to reconsider their policies regarding extremist groups.
