Government Denies Mass Resignation Reports by Bahrain Radio, TV Employees

Manama - The government has dismissed reports of mass resignations by employees of the Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation (BRTC) on account of the alleged high-handedness of its new head on Wednesday.

The Minister of Information Jihad Bukamal admitted at a Press conference on Wednesday resignations that ranged between five to seven per cent and included those who were seeking better career progression chances.

He denied new procedures were aimed at controlling the movements and decisions by BRTC 's members,. He said that the Corporation was engaged in a massive development programme meant for better radio and TV services for the public.

The Minister also defended investigation panels formed after the recruitment of the new Chief of BRTC Ahmed Najam few months ago to probe lack of professionalism at the Corporation. He said that such panels were formed to improve the working of the corporation.

"Those panels formed to defend the rights of employees as no action could be taken against them before giving them the chance to defend themselves," he said.

The Minister said that the new head was recruited to improve Bahrain's TV and Radio channels.

On rotation of employees from one department to another, he said that the decision has been taken to bring fresh blood to the BRTC 's departments.

He said that new regulations will help contribute to having an advanced media industry with a high ability to serve national development plans and stay updated with progress in local and regional media.

As part of the administration decisions that employees objected are the reduction of the monthly overtime from maximum 60 to 30 hours a month and the implementation of the rotating system for employees.

The workers also opposed the cancellation of the flexible timing. Bukamal said that the BRTC had started to reshuffle certain administrative and specialised positions and regulate overtime hours according to Civil Service Bureau's instructions and in compliance with relevant laws and regulations higher standard of quality ."

He said the "measures aimed at promoting the conditions of the staff, therefore, we are planning to regulate the corporation and make it an independent body from the Ministry of Information."
