Ministry allows outlets to raise chicken prices

The price of chicken is set to go up soon after the Ministry of Economy ( MoE ) allowed outlets in the UAE to raise the prices of both fresh and frozen chicken.

The new price of fresh chicken will be Dh16 per kilogramme, Dh4 more than the previous prices. Frozen chicken will also go up by the same amount and will now be priced at Dh14 per kg, up from the previous Dh10.

The prices of remaining commodities are fixed until the end of 2008.

The MoE yesterday held a meeting with consumer co-operative societies and trade centres in Abu Dhabi, notably Carrefour , Lulu and the Abu Dhabi Co-operative Society , to inform them of the decision. They were also asked to maintain the prices of other commodities at the prevailing fixed levels.

Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Head of the Consumer Protection Department at the MoE , said the ministry decided to allow these temporary increases until the higher committee of consumer protection holds a meeting within a few days and also until new shipments of Saudi chicken arrive.

He said increasing the supply of chicken will lead to the decrease in prices in the markets again and the prices of fresh and frozen chicken have only been allowed to increase temporarily after the market was studied in the light of increasing cost of production. The increase in prices also aims to prevent shortages of any commodity during Ramadan.

Al Nuaimi told Emirates Business the MoE will not allow any random increases in prices in the markets or any kind of monopolies.
