Valencia showcases products in Dubai

DUBAI - Trade imports from the Spanish autonomous community of Valencia are seen to grow in the UAE beginning this year following a trade exhibition co-organised by Dubai-based International Expo Consults (IEC).

Products such as ceramics, pigments and enamels, marble, natural stones and glazed tiles make up the bulk of UAE imports from Valencia which reached Dh748.5 million (134 million euros) during the first 10 months of last year. Imports in 2006 amounted to Dh910.5 million (163 million euros).

Angie Mountford, general manger of IEC, said the Valencian manufacturers have noted Dubai's growing importance as a regional and international trade hub. Products from Valencia have been exported to the UAE for the past two decades.

In a statement, event organiser Feria Valencia of Spain said the three-day exhibition called New Feria Valencia Concepts seeks to highlight the high-quality products of Valencia and "expand their footprints into the UAE and Gulf markets".

Abdul Rahman Al Owais, the UAE Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, inaugurated the show yesterday at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center.

"This is the first time a concerted effort has been made to introduce Valencian companies to the UAE and the regional market, which presents enormous business potential in the wake of its growing economy," said Alberto Catala Ruiz de Galarretta, president of Feria Valencia.

The show showcases high-end Valencian habitat products, which are apt for the UAE's booming construction industry. It also features a section on European children's fashion and a photo exhibition on Valencia City's medieval past and contemporary architecture.

"The show is a good reflection of Spanish industry's special interests in crossing new frontiers and making a leap into the international market," said de Vargas, director-general of Feria Valencia.

He said the Dubai show is part of the organiser's expansion plan, which took off last year with a show in Russia. "It was a success, and now we are presenting the second-edition in Dubai," he added.
