UAE: PM orders 40,000 villas for nationals
DUBAI -- His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, yesterday announced the construction of 40,000 villas for nationals in the country. After a whirlwind tour of the country's central and eastern areas, following recent heavy rains, Shaikh Mohammed said that Dh15 billion will be earmarked for the new housing programme for nationals that embraces the whole of the UAE.
He issued directives to the Minister of State for Financial and Industrial Affairs in this regard.
Shaikh Mohammed also said that he has instructed the Ministry of Social Affairs to immediately double the budget for social assistance allocations for nationals to Dh2.2 billion. This reaffirms his keenness to see that citizens benefit from this programme and live a decent life.
Shaikh Mohammed also said that a cabinet reshuffle was on the cards next month. The Vice-President and Prime Minister spent a fine sunny Thursday inspecting public works, visiting hamlets and villages nestling in the mountainous regions of the country.
He was accompanied by Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Dr Mohammed Khalfan bin Kharbash, Minister of State for Financial and Industrial Affairs , Sultan bin Sulayem, Chairman of Dubai Ports, Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, and Editors-in-Chief of Arabic and English newspapers in the UAE.
He interacted with citizens and asked about their welfare, specially after the recent heavy rains that lashed the UAE and flooded several areas in the emirates.
The tour began from the International Endurance City in Marmum and as the convoy of cars passed through roads and dirt tracks leading to villages perched on flat terrain surrounded by mountains several enthusiastic nationals followed the calvacade in cars and tried to engage their leader's attention.
Shaikh Mohammed stopped time and again, either to shake the hand of old folks or enquire about the situation of a village.
But one national received a huge round of applause after he recited a poem in honour of the Vice-President and Prime Minister just as he had finished inspecting a police outpost in the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah.
