Jordan Cement Factories Company (JCFC) employees end four-day strike

FUHEIS - Jordan Cement Factories Company (JCFC) employees have returned to work ending a four-day strike after representatives of the company and the General Trade Union of Construction Workers reached a settlement on Wednesday.

On Sunday, around 1,300 JCFC employees from its Fuheis and Rashadiyeh branches, as well as the company's administrative staff, initiated a work stoppage, demanding increased benefits.

According to the union, their demands included a JD40 raise in basic monthly salaries, a JD40 increase in their cost of living allowance as well as an extra JD5 in their annual increment.

Under Wednesday's agreement, which was supervised by Labour Ministry Secretary General Majed Habashneh, the JCFC agreed to raise workers' basic salaries by JD20 per month and their monthly cost of living allowance as of November 1.

The union's representatives also accepted the company's offer to increase the workers' share of profits by 0.5 per cent, 2.5 per cent less than the workers demanded.

The workers also wanted the company to reduce weekly working hours from 42.5 to 40, raise their housing loans to JD25,000 and increase their share in the company's profits from 4 to 6 per cent.

According to the company's official records, revenue for the first nine months of the year stands at JD48 million.

But the agreement stated that only active employees' housing loans will be increased by JD3,000. Those who received a housing loan before 2002 and are still on duty will also be entitled to the increase, while those who were employed after 2002 will get JD1,000 added to housing loans.

Furthermore, the JCFC will provide housing loans to an additional 120 workers as of January 1, 2008, according to the agreement which was made available to The Jordan Times.

The company also agreed to provide workers holding positions equivalent to managers with a JD5,000 car loan, health insurance and transportation expenses, which previously were reserved for only managers.

Following His Majesty King Abdullah's initiative, the company also decided to grant its workers a JD200 bonus on the occasion of the Eid Al Adha.

The one-year memorandum of understanding, which expires in November next year, stipulates that the union has the right to renegotiate with the company in October 2008.
