Malaysia Co. Favors Islamic Car Project
Managing Director of Proton Company on Thursday said that Malaysia supports the Islamic Countries Automobile project as proposed by Iran, Fars news Agency reported.Addressing a press conference in Tehran, Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir added that Iran, Malaysia and Turkey are experienced Islamic states in the automotive industry.
He stressed that the three countries should cooperate effectively. The official recalled that his company can make the Islamic car.
On the high price of Proton products in Iran, he said, "We are trying to reduce our costs and hence increase our competitiveness with Iranian automakers."
He also disclosed plans to produce BLM model in Iran. "This car has a low price and can rapidly become a popular product in the Iranian market," he noted.
Regarding his company's cooperation with Iran, he said that Malaysia will continue to cooperate with Iran irrespective of international pressures and sanctions.
He recalled that his company has sold 5,000 taxis to Iran which are also used by the police in the United Kingdom.
He referred to the production of gas-powered automobiles by Proton and observed, "We have conducted extensive research on automobiles that run on CNG. We are planning to install the dual-fuel system for our exports to Iran."
Syed Zainal arrived in Iran on Wednesday to attend the conference on New Trade Opportunities for Malaysia and Iran (Proton-Zagross Khodro).
Meanwhile, addressing the conference on Friday, Chairman of Board of Directors of Zagross Khodro Darioush Gholami said that 5,000 taxis sold by Proton to Iran will join the transportation fleet in two months.
He recalled that with the support of the government and the public demand, the number of Proton taxis can reach up to 50,000.
He also revealed plans to establish Zagross Taxi Company and said that drivers of the company are to own the taxis. "Drivers will work on the basis of contracts and will have no worries about procuring spare parts or repairing their taxis," he noted.
