Saudi Arabia: US Diploma System for Schools Approved
The Saudi school system will soon offer an "American Diploma" program to secondary school students, giving them an opportunity to receive a degree compatible with further study in the United States and around the world. Minister of Education Dr. Abdullah Saleh Al-Obaid recently announced his support for the new program at Dar Al-Fikr School, which will combine traditional elements of Islamic education with subjects more readily accepted by international universities. The new American diploma depends on a credits system - similar to American colleges and universities - in which the student must collect 180 credits to graduate and obtain a diploma. Subjects emphasized in the new program include English, advanced mathematics, biology, world history and computer literacy.
The American Diploma program also embraces variety in educational methods, following international paradigms and allowing students to switch more easily from Saudi schools to study abroad. The diploma will equal a secondary-school degree in the Kingdom, but will also be accepted without question by most institutions in the United States as well as international hubs like Cairo and Beirut.
"We will take into consideration the Islamic rules and constants that should not be touched by applying this American program," he said.
