Stay cool with Cooling Towers by DYWIDAG International
On May 9, 2006, DYWIDAG International GmbH, Germany, together with its Joint Venture partner Mushrif Trading & Contracting Co , Kuwait, was awarded the Contract for the Construction of two Sea Water Cooling Towers in Kuwait. The Cooling Towers will be part of the new ethylene and derivatives complex Olefins II that is currently under construction in Shuaiba, Kuwait. The complex will be operated by a joint venture of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) and Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) and is planned to have an output of 850,000 metric tons per annum of ethane and a world-scale 600,000 metric tons per annum ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol. The plant will add an important capacity to Kuwait's program to significantly increase the country's ethylene derivatives production.
Both Cooling Towers will have a base diameter of 82 meter and a height of 80 meter. The cooling towers will have an internal structure built with precast-elements for carrying the cooling fill. As the Cooling Towers will be run with sea water, special corrosion protection will be applied to protect the structures from the aggressive influence of the salt water. The hot water will irrigate through the cooling fill and will be cooled down by the upward air-flow. The air-flow will be created by 32 ventilators installed at the lower part of the tower-shell. Part of the cooling tower system will also be an inlet structure for the hot water being pumped into the towers and an outlet structure for the cooled water leaving the towers. Furthermore a two-storey substation building and infrastructure will be constructed.
DYWIDAG International has a long experience in the design and construction of Cooling Towers. Just recently the construction of the SAFCO IV Cooling Tower in Jubail, Saudi Arabia was completed. Apart from the Cooling Tower in Kuwait we have two Cooling Tower Projects in Saudi Arabia under construction, SHARQ III in Jubail and YANSAB in Yanbu.
