ME private jet customers to expand fleet
DUBAI -- Lufthansa Technik, the aircraft maintenance, overhaul and services arm of Lufthansa Group is expecting a 15-20 per cent jump in revenues to $160 million by the end of 2006 in the Middle East market.Having won maintenance orders from most of the commercial airlines in the region, the company is now eyeing customers for the latest Boeing 787 to increase its share in the private jet business. The German major has over 1,300 commercial and jet business customers worldwide of which 100-120 customers are from the Middle East region. In order to win orders for the latest dream liner Boeing 787, company officials are here targeting VIPs as well as executive jet owners and operators.
Lufthansa Technik and Andrew Winch Designs have launched their joint VIP interior concept for the Boeing 787, due for global launch in 2008. Talking to Khaleej Times, Walter Heerdt, Senior Vice-President Marketing and Sales of Lufthansa Technik said, "We have the biggest market for maintenance and overhaul of commercial jets but our focus is now on private jets to grow our business. We are looking for orders for the B787 that is the latest among the fleet."
Out of the 540 VIP and private jet customers, about 20 are in the region. "We want them to replace their old jets or opt for a new one. We are taking orders for delivery in 2009-2010 and the engineering, certification and completion will be done by us," says Heerdt.
"Even designing the interiors takes about a year, says Heerdt adding that India and Russia are now the new emerging markets for private, VIP jets." The era of the private jet arrived only in the late 1990s to the oil rich countries of the Gulf, but it is taking off in a very promising manner with industry sources forecasting a big spurt in demand for hiring or purchasing business and private jets.
