Morocco, Russia sign cooperation agreements
HM King Mohammed VI and Russian President Vladimir Putin presided Thursday over the signing ceremony of a number of cooperation agreements, reported MAP news agency.Morocco and Russia have signed a cooperation agreement in justice, which stipulates transferring prisoners, reintegrating them and allowing them to spend their prison terms in their respective countries.
They also signed a three-year fisheries cooperation agreement, to come into force on Oct. 15, 2006, which will allow 12 Russian boats to fish in the Moroccan waters.
The two countries also finalised accords to promote bilateral convention in the fields of tourism, culture and scientific research, communication, sports, health and agriculture.
A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed by the Moroccan Foreign Trade Bank (BMCE) and the Russian bank of foreign economic affairs.
Morocco and Russia had also set up a joint business council which will take charge of strengthening economic cooperation and trade exchanges between the two countries.
The convention providing for the creation of the council was signed in June 2006 in Moscow.
President Vladimir Putin wound up Thursday his two-day official visit to Morocco, the first for a Russian president. He was invited by King Mohammed VI.
In an earlier interview with MAP news agency, the Russian Ambassador to Morocco, Alexandre Tokovinine, had expressed delight over the "active" and "successful" cooperation between the two countries, recalling that in 2005 Russia was classified as the fourth trade partner of the Kingdom.
He added that Morocco is a "respectable" partner in the North African region and the Arab and Islamic world.
