Jordan: Ali Assad appointed as Ministry of Health secretary general for technical affairs

AMMAN -- The Cabinet on Tuesday appointed Ali Assad as Ministry of Health secretary general for technical affairs, and terminated the services of Amin Kawar, general manager of Jordan Post Company .

During its weekly meeting yesterday, the Council of Ministers decided to invite companies, which showed interest in investing in oil shale projects in Lejun and other locations in the Kingdom, to submit their proposals. These should include the type of technologies to be used and their expectations of oil production levels in addition to contracting and commercial conditions for their proposals. Areas that have been already assigned for Shell International and the Jordan Cement Factories Company were excluded.

In this regard, the Cabinet decided to form a special tenders committee headed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral resources secretary general and consisting of senior officials from various concerned departments.

The Council of Ministers also endorsed the Public Transport Regulatory Commission's (PTRC) decision to terminate the contract with the Duleil Transportation Company and to sign a new 10-year contract.

In the new contract, the company would support its services with seven modern buses fully equipped to serve the disabled according to accredited specifications.

The company will also be required to equip its buses with Automatic Vehicle Location Systems, and to connect it with the current PTRC system.

Under the new contract, the company's annual payment to the PTRC, amounting to JD85,000, will not immediately change. The payment will remain the same until the end of the current contract on Nov. 19, 2008, after which it will be increased by 10 per cent.

In addition, the Council of Ministers decided to approve the recommendations of the Social and Economic Development Committee, which accepted an agreement with the consultancy firm M&K.

The company currently provides consultancy services for the East Amman project, including the special electricity generation project.

The Cabinet allocated $500,000 for the project in 2007 and the same amount for 2008.

Also yesterday, the Council of Ministers endorsed several regulations regulating youth activities, the Jordan Securities Commission and the higher education accreditation system.
