Mushrif Trading and Contracting to Construct a $65 Million Water Station in Bahrain

Beirut (APD) - Kuwait-based Mushrif Trading and Contracting Company announced that it has won a tender from the Bahraini ministry of electricity and water for the construction of a water pumping station in Bahrain at $65 million, the Kuwait-based al Rai al Aam daily reported Monday.

The company stated that its successful bid for the tender project included the construction, maintenance and operation of the pumping station.

Mushrif had won a number of similar contracts in Bahrain over the past three years, during which it completed three projects worth a combined $57 million for the construction, renovation and expansion of sewage treatment plants.

While Bahrain is investing heavily in the water and electricity sectors, the kingdom's development strategy for these sectors focuses on boosting the role of the private sector in managing Bahrain's infrastructure.

This was underlined on Sunday by the announcement of privatizing Al Hidd Energy and Water Station in the kingdom's largest privatization measure to date, which Bahraini officials described as turning point in the country's electricity and water generation.

The agreement is worth $1.25 billion and covers purchase of the existing plant by an international consortium for $738 million plus construction cost for establishing the third phase of the Al Hidd project, a 60 million-gallon-per-day (MIGD) water desalination plant expected to assume operations by the end of 2007.

The consortium of multinational energy companies comprises London-based International Power (40%), Brussels-based Suez Energy International (30%) and Japan's Sumitomo Corporation (30%).

According to press releases by International Power and Suez Energy International, the Al Hidd privatization deal includes a 20-year power and water purchase agreement, under which the consortium will sell the entire output of the facility to Bahrain's ministry of electricity and water.

The existing output capacity at Al Hidd is for 910 MW of electricity and 30 MIGD of desalinated water.

In the Gulf region, International Power already operates power generation plants in the UAE and Oman. Suez Energy International is involved in power and water projects in Bahrain, Oman and Abu Dhabi, where it is a shareholder in the Taweelah A1 plant. Sumitomo Corporation has active business interests in numerous GCC and Middle Eastern countries.

Mushrif Trading and Contracting Company, which was established in 1968 and is wholly owned by Al Wazzan family, is involved in heavy civil construction, electro-mechanical and sewage and treatment projects. [TS]
