Saudi Arabia: MEPA Asks Publishers to Cooperate in Order to Strengthen Industry

JEDDAH, 27 September 2005 -- Dr. Azzam Al-Dakhil, executive vice president of Saudi Research & Marketing Group (SRMG), has called for cooperation among publishers in the Middle East to serve their interests and strengthen the industry.

In a statement after chairing the third meeting of the Middle East Publishers Association (MEPA) in the Dubai Media City, Al-Dakhil said the association could play a big role in boosting the publishing industry in the region.

"It is imperative that the Saudi Research & Publishing Company (SRPC), being a leading media firm, cooperate with other regional leaders in the industry to make the association a reality," Al-Dakhil said.

Al-Dakhil, who is managing director of SRPC and chairman of the association's constituent committee, thanked the region's publishers for supporting an organization that brings them under a single umbrella in order to discuss their problems and increase their professionalism.

The meeting discussed a number of important issues including the announcement of the association's official registration, its winning of a license to carry out its programs and membership conditions. The body's activities to promote the industry and its website also were discussed during the meeting.

The meeting set up a committee for membership affairs and to endorse executive aspects of the association. It will also prepare the association's final project, which will be approved in the next meeting, scheduled for December.

The committee members are: Arif Al-Awani of Emirates Media, Abu Dhabi, Ali Sabbagh, Ad Media Co., Dubai, Saghir Ahmed Khan of Khaleej Times, Dubai, Muhammad Baharun, Dubai Consultancy, Yasser Al-Ghaslan of SRPC and Claude Mazloum of Collections, Lebanon.

In his statement, Muhammad ibn Ghalib, executive director of the International Region for Media Production, said Dubai Free Trade Zone authorities had given the association the license to start its activities.

"We are always ready to support publishers and help them overcome the difficulties and obstacles facing them," he said. Muhammad Baharun emphasized the importance of the association, adding that it would represent publishers at international forums.

The association was set up following the first meeting of Middle East publishers in Dubai in the middle of January. Major publishing houses in the region are expected to join the organization.
