Managem Records Increase in Production and Sale of Metals in 1H 2005

Cairo (APD) - Managem, Morocco's largest mining company has recorded a significant increase in production and sales of various metals during the first half of 2005, Maghreb Arabe Presse, reported Friday.

Managem, in which Morocco's largest private conglomerate Goupe ONA owns almost 76%, produced 76,000 tons of zinc at the value of $15.3 million and the group's lead production reached 17,285 tons at the value of $5.3 million.

On the other hand, Managem's copper production reached 4,949 tons at the value of $3 million, its silver production reached 86,850 kg at the value of $17 million, while group's cobalt production reached 782,019 kg at the value of $23.5 million.

Managem incurred MAD 42.5 million ($5 million) in operating losses in 2004, compared to MAD103 million ($12 million) profits in 2003.

Managem owns six mining and hydrometallurgy exploitation companies in Morocco and has exploitation activities in West Africa. The mining group was listed on the Casablanca stock exchange in June 2000.

The mineral industry is Morocco's largest foreign exchange earning sector and accounts for 35% of foreign trade and about 6% of Morocco's GDP. Morocco's minerals industry is dominated by phosphate mining, where it is the world's third largest producer, after the US and China.

According to official figures, total mine production reached 29.39 Mt in 2004, compared to 24.39 Mt in 2002. [FC]
