Tourism in Morocco on the Rise, 6 Million Tourists Expected in 2005

Cairo (APD) - Adel al-Dewery, Morocco's tourism minister, expected tourists visiting the North African Country of Morocco to reach 6 million in 2005, compared to 5 million tourists in 2004, the Bahrain-based al-Wasat newspaper reported Tuesday.

Moreover, the Moroccan Airports Office announced that the number of passengers who have passed through the country's airports has increased almost 15% to reach 7.7 million passengers in 2004 due to a 16% increase in international flights. France has topped all international destinations, dominating 37% of total international flights.

With the significant increase in the number of tourists visiting the country, tourists visiting Morocco for the first time crossed the 5 million mark last year.

The Moroccan tourism industry has been luring increased investments in line with the Moroccan government-led policy to reach 10 million tourists by 2010. Accor Maroc, the subsidiary of the international hotel group chain Accor, decided early July to invest 1.6 billion dirham ($180 million) during the next four years by establishing 15 new hotels.

By adding 15 new hotels, Accor Maroc's hotel portfolio would increase to reach 36 hotels. Accor Maroc currently operates 21 hotels in Morocco, including nine under the Ibis Moussafir brand and six Sofitel properties. [FC]
