Orascom Telecom Holding Bids for a Fixed-Line License in Morocco

Cairo (APD) - Egypt's Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH), the regional GSM operator, is bidding for the first time in its history for a fixed-line phone license, al-Alam al-Youm reported Wednesday.

Orascom Telecom Holding is bidding for the new generation of fixed-line phone license in the North African country of Morocco. OTH is competing with two other offers from Maroc Connect and Medi Telecom, a subsidiary of Telefonica of Spain and Portugal Telecom, who already operates the second mobile license in Morocco.

Agence Nationale de Reglementation des Telecommunications, the Moroccan telecom watchdog, has tendered last February for the fixed-line phone license. A total of 33 companies have expressed their interest and withdrew the license's conditions but only the three companies have submitted their bids.

Maroc Telecom, in which Vivendi Universal of France has a 51% stake, is currently the sole provider of fixed lines telephony in Morocco with 1.3 million fixed lines.

On June 7, Orascom Telecom Holding said that its subscribers have reached over 20 million for the first time, compared to 17.5 million subscribers as of the end of first quarter 2005.

Orascom Telecom Holding has its GSM operations in seven emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Orascom Telecom operates GSM networks in Algeria, Pakistan, Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe. [FC]
