New Tumour Board is initiated to advance treatment for Oncology patients

Dubai, UAE, 11 July 2011.  Welcare Hospital launched a multidisciplinary Tumour Board this July. With the aim of supporting and increasing the quality of treatment received by Oncology patients, the Board will facilitate discussion between cross-discipline specialists in order to deliver the best possible course of treatment for each patient.

"Diagnostic decisions, tumour diagnosis, tumour development, treatment plans and modality of care are significantly altered and influenced by such interdisciplinary collaboration," Asst. Prof. Dr. Paul Sungler, the hospital's Medical Director said. "It is now mandatory and in the best interests of each patient that our dedicated specialists meet to discuss each and every cancer case."

Today there are a vast number of cancer types. Consequently, accurate staging, treatment options and modalities are becoming increasingly complex.  "It remains difficult, sometimes impossible, for a single clinician to determine which treatment option best serves the patient. For example, surgeons may not always be aware of the latest advancements in the fields of Oncology, Radiotherapy and Genetics," says Dr Sungler. "Therefore, a Tumour Board serves not only as a medical tool, but as an ethical board to ensure the most informed decision-making for individual cases."

Oncologist, Dr Mikhael Fadi says that for each cancer case, the Tumour Board team will be made aware of the "clinical presentation, work up and modality for the initial tissue diagnosis, clarification and differential diagnosis and the specifics of the management plan. Briefings and discussion will cover all treatment options such as initial surgery (with or without adjuvant treatment), upfront chemotherapy/radiotherapy  for interval cytoreduction [a means of reducing the tumoural mass], and, if necessary, palliative surgery options."

With this occasion, Dr. Sungler will be hosting a Dubai Health Authority approved lecture entitled "The Impact of a Tumour Board" at Welcare Hospital on 13th July 2011. Doctors from other hospitals are welcome to attend and will earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) points.
