Gold reserves amount to 300 tons and close to 135 tons are located in West Azarbaijan province, said the director of exploitation affairs at Iran's National Geology and Mineral Exploration Organization.

Behrouz Borna added that with the inauguration of production units in the two mines of Zereh-Shouran and Agh-Darreh, 3.5 tons of gold are produced annually.

"West Azarbaijan, with 10 known gold regions, ranks first in terms of owning mineral indices of gold," he said.

"This northwestern province is of high importance in terms of being located on the mineral belt of gold, iron and copper."

Borna noted that a concentrated gold axis is located between Piranshahr and Saqqez. The official also said an iron belt stretches from Soltanieh in Zanjan province to Naqadeh in West Azarbaijan.

Referring to Orumieh Lake as a valuable economic asset, Borna said currently the exploration project for extracting potash from Orumieh Lake is underway.
